A Tiny Baby With Masses of Hair
I do a happy dance when a baby with masses of hair arrives at the studio.
All I can see when a family arrives is a snuggled baby with a button nose and an oversized woolly hat. No hint of what is underneath. And then mum pops the hat off and there it is. A full head of the most extraordinary chocolate brown hair going in every direction. That moment never gets old.
This little girl was less than a month old and already completely herself. Sometimes babies of this age simply sleep. Not this one. She had shiny bright eyes, the most expressive little face and she knew exactly how to work a camera. I could not get enough of her.
I could not resist a shot that was simply the top of her head. Those extraordinary spiky locks in all their glory. It ended up being one of the parents' favourite images in the gallery and went straight into their wall art collection. Never underestimate a detail shot. Sometimes the most unexpected image is the one that parents treasure the most.
Those wide awake moments at this age are pure gold. She was alert, curious and completely engaged with everything going on around her. Getting down close to her level and using my screen rather than my viewfinder meant I could peek out and make eye contact and she would reward me with the most wonderful expressions.
After her mid session feed she was ready to sleep and I wrapped her in my baby soft merino wool shawl. There is something about a sleeping newborn wrapped in white that never gets old. The shawl softens everything and gives the images a timeless quality that parents love to have on their walls.
Family photographs are every bit as important as the portraits of baby alone. These are the images that will matter most in twenty years. The ones this little girl will look at when she is grown and know without any doubt how loved she was from the very beginning.
I always make sure to get mum and dad into the session while there is still energy and joy in the room. Never leave the family portraits until the very end.
This is what a newborn session at Mabel & Møøse looks like. Natural, calm and entirely led by the baby. Every session is different because every baby is different and that is exactly as it should be.
